I know this is trite, but there is no KDE5 and never will be. The offerings from KDE (the community) are applications, libraries, and the workspace, each of these released independently and on different schedules.

Kubuntu and Ubuntu at odds

Yes, it is trite. There is a Frameworks 5 and a Plasma 5 which constitute what most people mean by the desktop environment (the "DE" in "KDE"). Obviously you can run what applications you like on top, including GTK/GNOME, Motif or Xlib. Why do I get the feeling that this trite "there is no KDE 5" response is designed to deflect questions?

Yep. And this is how it works: you explain it patiently, people listen, nod politely, and say "Whatever. KDE5." :)
