Mark Webbink Joins Board of Software Freedom Law Center
The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC), has announced that Mark Webbink has joined its board of directors. "Webbink comes to SFLC from Red Hat, the premiere Linux and open source vendor, where he served as its first general counsel beginning in 2000. In 2004, he became Red Hat's deputy general counsel for intellectual property, a position he served in until his retirement in August 2007. During his tenure with Red Hat, Webbink wrote and spoke extensively on the subjects of open source software, software patents, and patent reform."

KnowledgeTreeLive service launched
KnowledgeTree has announced the launch of KnowledgeTreeLive, a software-as-a-service document management application built on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and the rPath virtual appliance platform. "The KnowledgeTreeLive on-demand document management service brings the powerful capabilities of the open source KnowledgeTree application to users wishing to subscribe to an easy to use, cost-effective and secure hosted application. The KnowledgeTreeLive service includes document management and collaboration features such as document versioning and auditing, metadata and content searching, workflow, tagging and tag clouds, RSS feeds and email triggers.LPA announces African affiliates
The Linux Professional Institute has announces new affiliates in Africa. The LPI "announced new affiliates in East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania) and Nigeria. "These two new affiliates are indicative of the growing importance of Linux and Open Source Software both in the field of education and IT capacity development in Africa," said John Meaney, LPI Area Operations Manager for EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). Mr. Meaney noted that there was significant interest in the region in Linux professionalism and that he was involved in ongoing discussions with other potential affiliates for the Middle East and Africa."Oracle open-sources the OCI8 database driver for PHP
Oracle has announced the availability of an open-source preview release of OCI8. "Continuing to deliver on its long-standing commitment to the Open Source community, Oracle today announced the contribution and a preview release of an enhanced Oracle Call Interface (OCI8) database driver for PHP. This helps bring breakthrough scalability to PHP applications, further enhancing PHP as a viable development environment for mission-critical applications. The OCI8 database driver for PHP supports important Oracle(R) Database features such as connection pooling and fast application notification, enabling a single industry-standard server to support tens of thousands of database connections while providing higher availability."Scalix 11.2 released
Version 11.2 of Scalix has been announced. "Scalix, the premier award-winning Linux e-mail, calendaring and messaging company, today announced the release of Scalix 11.2, with significant new features to support hosted multi-tenant environments, the latest Linux servers, and enhanced Microsoft Outlook facilities for mobile devices. Scalix 11.2 allows application service providers (ASPs) to host multiple customers on a single Scalix server without the use of virtualization. They can now easily subdivide a single Scalix installation into multiple independent partitions, each with its own address book and global address list."TransGaming and Mandriva renew OEM agreement
TransGaming has announced that it has renewed an OEM agreement with Mandriva. "TransGaming Inc., a leading developer of software portability products for the electronic entertainment industry, announced today the renewal of the OEM and distribution agreement with Mandriva, the leading retail distribution for the Linux operating system. Under this agreement, MandrivaLinux 2008 customers will receive access to TransGaming's Cedega product that will allow them to play hundreds of PC games out-of-the-box."

A three-day event is being held at the Googleplex, 17-19 January 2008, to celebrate the release of KDE 4.0. Free Software Directory gets a new look
The Free Software Directory has undergone a web site makeover. "The Free Software Directory is a project of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). We catalog useful free software that runs under free operating systems particularly the GNU operating system and its GNU/Linux variants."
Announcing Planet CentOS
The Planet CentOS web site has been announced. "The CentOS team is pleased to announce the Planet CentOS website. Are you wondering what is cooking in the kitchens of the CentOS developers? Wait no longer, Planet CentOS aggregates the blogs of CentOS contributors, merging them into one feed.
