Actually Canonical has several teams working on communicating with vendors and also teams fixing issues. So it may not be a problem for them to pursue "the latest, the greatest" hardware.

Is it worth it?

The process of getting that support into a mature state still takes time, though - I make a point of never buying the latest and greatest hardware and part of the reason is that support is often a little rough at first (significantly eating into the advantage of this year's hardware vs. last year's)

There's also the fact that last year's hardware is often half the price it was last year, and I'll likely be still using it for several years (*some* of my desktop is over 20 years old, though I think it's only the case itself at this point :-P) so the one year performance benefit feels small...
