This reminds me of an issue with tmpwatch I ran into about a decade ago (on Fedora). During some experimenting, I did a bind mount of /home on /tmp/somedir, after which I gained a lot of free disk space. After reporting the issue, tmpwatch was improved to be more robust against such.. users. I wonder how systemd would behave here.
