Not sure why all the hostility here. One thing is clear though, nobody understands the Linux driver landscape. Half the comments show that. I probably do not understand it either.

For my own part, I wish them well. They were clear about why they want to replace Nouveau ( which is what this is an alternative to ) and those goals make sense to me. Also, while I do not necessarily think we should "write everything in Rust", I am excited to see some more real-world Rust go into the kernel. That initiative is never going to bear fruit if people do not take the plunge and write some code.

Based on what I read about the positive experience the Asahi Linux crew had writing their Apple GPU drivers in Rust, I am also hopeful and interested to see if Red Hat has a similar experience.

I hope this goes well. Any effort that we can leverage to make the NVIDIA experience better in Linux is welcome to me. If nothing else, it may cut down on the "Wayland is not ready" posts from NVIDIA users. If it turns out this was a good bet and this ends up being the most advanced and high-quality option, we all benefit. Even if we do not have NVIDIA hardware, this could pave the way to more exciting things.
