The thing is, a "free standalone browser" _is_ not sustainable in the long run. That was the impetus for several of those moonshot projects (most notably FirefoxOS targeting smartphones); to try and make it so they're not entirely dependent upon platforms controlled by other, often hostile, organizations... that use said platforms to push (if not outright embed) their own competing browsers.
