Last time I checked, the main sponsors of gccrs were Open Source Security Inc. and Embecosm. They've been contributing resources where none of the large companies did it... and they could afford doing it thanks to some of their other operations which earn money.
Come to think of it, with their history of over 20 years consistently working on making operating system kernels (mainly Linux, but not only it) safer, Open Source Security Inc. is one of the most obvious candidates for helping with that work, through the usual defense in depth philosophy: Rust is not a silver bullet, but can be part of the technical solution.
