No, because if you actually read the article, it explicitly states that when patches which are too disruptive even for -mm start showing up, 2.7 will likely be created.

I also had the same question; it was engendered by this curious sentence: "Even then, however, 2.7 will track 2.6 as closely as possible, and it may go away when the feature which drove its existence becomes ready to go into the mainline."

Any idea what that means? Will the 2.7 tree just dry up and blow away when it's not needed anymore? It might be better to call it something else than 2.7 if that's the case...

Nobody really knows how 2.7 will work, once it's created. But, yes, there is a good chance that the developments which forced the creation of 2.7 will, once they are ready, be pushed downward into 2.6 and 2.7 will fade away. It all really depends on the nature of the changes, however. Someday, something sufficiently disruptive will come along and there will be no choice but to push forward to a 2.8.
