This is a false dichotomy - there is a lot of space between "slap custom chrome on top of Chrome" and "reinvent the entire stack from scratch". There are existing XML, JS, ... libraries that could be used, I find it hard to believe there is a pressing need to have yet more of those custom-made for this specific project.

But they seem to be succeeding (and having fun doing it)...so I'm not sure what the problem is

There are advantages with owning the roadmap of your dependencies
