It's FLOSS that has re-defined "proprietary", not me ...

It might actually have been Microsoft that did it, I don't know. But the meaning here is not the common meaning, and the meaning here is MUCH YOUNGER than the common meaning.

After all, proprietors normally hold OPEN HOUSE, don't they? :-)

Cheers,
Wol

Thinking back to history, the meaning that FLOSS uses today actually classes open source as proprietary!

Iirc it was part of Microsoft's marketing campaign - Unix (supplied as source!) was proprietary and expensive, only running on expensive kit, while Windows was Open and Cheap, and ran on any old kit.

That re-definition, in turn, got taken over by the Free Software crowd (who lost the original meaning of "has a proprietor", or owner) and turned against Microsoft, along with the coining of EEE.

Cheers,
Wol
