The only reason that we have a single DNS, and not multiple, is that there's value from us all agreeing that when I talk about "LWN.net", I mean this site, and not a different host (which is exploited by - for example - TLS's use of X.509 certificates that tie the identity to DNS name). In theory, though, my DNS servers could have their own private TLD, and rewrite lwn.net.iana to lwn.net before asking the IANA roots to resolve it.
