All the APM laptop I had could suspend to disk fairly reliably without OS support.
It took years for ACPI to achieve that on Linux.

And it probably took several minutes to do so, using the dog slow BIOS disk access routines.

Originally Linux ACPI was written from the available spec.
But hardware vendors only cared about how it worked under Windows, so a new Linux ACPI came out emulating Windows behaviour so buggy firmware worked.
