Seeking the endgame for Debian's /usr merge

Why would you even move the files if the directory symlinks are still in place?

And the directory symlinks *have* to stay in place for things like #!/bin/sh precisely (the FHS even demands that, if ed(1) is installed, it’s reachable as /bin/ed, and I successfully defended this against a distro trying to move it to /usr/bin/ early).

Anyway, this systemdification of Debian is creepy.
