Is that just me or is it strange to release a version 21.x based on Ubuntu 22.y at the end of 2022?

Even if it might have looked like it lately, Mint's version numbers have no connection to calendar years, they've just been counting upwards starting with 1.0 in 2006...

LinuxMint follows the older, more traditional scheme for version numbers. They don't reflect the year they're released, nor the underlying distro they're based on.

Addendum: version numbers do correlate with the underlying distro: all minor versions of the same major version number have the same underlying distribution (e.g. LinuxMint 18 through 18.3 were all based on Ubuntu 16.04), but the major version number cannot simply be derived from Ubuntu's version number; it isn't e.g. Ubuntu mod 2000.
