Development quote of the week

The web is for users. In order to fulfill that promise we need to ensure that they, not sites, control their experience, whether that means blocking ads or viewing content in accessible form. This requires building a browser that displays the web the way the user wants it — rather than just following instructions from the site — as well as strengthening the technical properties of web standards that enable this kind of reinterpretation.

"Monetization - The Web is primarily funded through advertising"

More relevant, perhaps, is that Mozilla is primarily funded by surveillance advertisers.

None of the mainstream browsers appear to align with this quote, they all aim to satisfy web content providers at first glance. There are small concessions to users like Reader mode or No Style mode, but they aren't the default anywhere nor can they be easily made the default on a per-site basis. It is only through browser extensions like Dark Reader, Stylus, Greasemonkey and uMatrix/uBlock that browsers can currently fulfill that promise.

The words on that page aren't worth the electrons they're written on. They've acted against almost all of those nine points themselves in the past few years.

It's not even cynicism any more to point out this PR stunt is to make people forget they ran a full-page ad last week on the new tab page for a company more evil than Eich. It's just grim reality.

I am pleasantly surprised that none of Mitchell's deplatforming screed has made it into their vision. Although I am skeptical given the politics and financial model of mozilla that they will take the necessary steps forward. I wonder when they will be brave enough to turn on ad blocking for everyone.
