This suggests to me that either A) they are still in the process of compatibility testing or B) they have finished compatibility testing and the numbers don't look good (because if they did look good, Valve would be shouting it from the rooftops instead of giving us this vague "wait and see" answer). What really surprises me is the fact that people are preordering a device which might not even run half their games.
(Yes, it's a PC, yes you can install whatever OS you want, including Windows, but in practice I don't think a large portion of the target audience intends to do that.)

Based on my personal experience with Proton, I expect it's more A than B. It's *really* good. I just buy games now without even bothering to check the supported platforms. There are still some misses, and if I were 100% Linux-only I might make the occasional refund, but they really are rare.
