Interesting. So if your software of interest used InstallShield or whatever, then MS will install it for you. Hmm...

So why am I still running XP so I can carry on playing MS Age Of Empires :-) (although I haven't tried to install it on a later Windows recently, so it might work now ...)

Especially when AoE (both 1 and 2) runs perfectly fine on wine.
