I commute further than you do, and find it useful to get notified on the move. I don't want to get the laptop out while travelling at 70 MPH on the motorway (it's inconvenient for the people around me), but I do have my phone in use as a television or eReader while travelling.

If I get a notification, I can read it on the phone and decide whether I'm going to get the laptop out and work, or leave it until I'm in the office/at home.

The exact point at which I'll switch from phone to laptop depends on how busy it is; when I've got people on all sides, getting the laptop out to work is very antisocial, whereas when the coach is under 1/4th full, it's barely a problem to have it out for the entire journey.
