> However, I started doing that 20 years ago, and have generally been pretty religious about jumping through the ever-increasing hoops imposed by the mail monopolies.

I'm pretty sure these hoops are what kept spam at a manageable level and email barely usable. I'm also pretty sure all the standards for these hoops have been kept open and free by the "mail monopolies". Compare that to the Instant messaging solutions everyone uses today. And to spam on phone lines.

Like many other Internet protocols, The SpaM Transfer Protocol was incredibly naive wrt. security. I'm sure it worked very well in the original la-la land where it was created.
