The real reason why stick shifts are more common in Europe is that we tend(ed) to use smaller/cheaper cars, and automatics used to be more expensive & heavier. In a small car, the extra power required would also have forced a more powerful engine, and in some cases the car would have become 20% more expensive or so.

Larger/luxury cars always were much more commonly sold with an automatic, and of course hybrid & electrical cars (usually?) have them too…
