Your better tools seem to need an insane amount of resources to do things. In Civ Eng terms, I'll need a bucket the size of Mars to move a few tonnes of conc from A to B.

True, but *he* pays the price of the one-time hardware and software stack, and I (and millions more) have lower resource requirements, with cheaper hardware.

It is like you buying an expensive CNC machine; each part that I buy is cheaper and lighter.

No. Your lighter machine part comes with all the scurf attached such that you can't remove it. The amount of crud and cruft modern programs carry that comes along as part of the toolkit is amazing. Your typical embedded engineer could probably write the program using our modern toolkits, then reduce its size 10- or even 100-fold by aggressive stripping of unused code. Your normal programmer probably wouldn't even know where to start doing that ...
