Announcing coreboot 4.14

The coreboot firmware project has released version 4.14. "These changes have been all over the place, so that there's no particular area to focus on when describing this release: We had improvements to mainboards, to chipsets (including much welcomed work to open source implementations of what has been blobs before), to the overall architecture."

I am wondering when this thing get preinstalled in the laptop ,so we can gain more control over our hardware.(Okay, James Bottomlay shows us a way to gain more control over it , many moons ago,IIRC,owned a device bootm up)

Oh, and the process(I am voicing this , because I found it quite intimidating for an ordinary user like me).

Okay, wistful thinking, someone else done the hard work for use(they have already done it, one little thing) ...please spoon feed us , so can start using it.(I said, it is a WISTFUL THINKING) .

Ron, any clue?

System76 has a number of systems with CoreBoot. There may be other vendors as well. So ,i guess the answer is "now." :)

More generally, there's a list at https://doc.coreboot.org/distributions.html#hardware-ship... (A documentation change to add System76 is in flight)

They are rarely up-front with exactly which blobs they are using however, and coreboot requires many more blobs than 5 years ago (and many CPUs used signed blobs these days too).

And I have to say that the few times I've rebooted my System76 laptop, it's **fast**.

All Chromebooks (except the first three models ever released) are shipped with coreboot preinstalled. Other vendors ship laptops with coreboot as well, but Chromebooks probably have the biggest market share and vendor/model variety.

My current work-from-home computer is a Samsung Chromebook (the first or second model, "stumpy") with coreboot installed, and one or two other mods ;-)
