I applaud your even-handed analysis. The concern is that their behavior was deliberately meant to deceive and caused real harm to UMN, the reputations of the individuals in question, and it wasted the time and energy of real kernel developers and maintainers.

I agree that vitriol doesn't help. UMN should pay a trusted organization to help fix the damage to the kernel.
