Too bad they didn't just make their own projects or forks to experiment with, and have the collaborators be properly informed about the scope of what was going on. Sure, the sample sizes would be smaller, but then they could get the basic ethics sorted and maybe improve some niche software in the process.

Or a "Hey Greg, can we experiment on you?" "No." "OK."
