I see your stylistic point; perhaps using another symbol would make it clearer that f is just a placeholder.

Yes. The first time I read it I was thinking "how much monkey patching is going on to allow the arithmetic of functions?", but then I read the parameter names and it made sense.

Or simply call the function that defines the derivative of f: df(t, f).
