I think it's easier to just point out that most major distributions are using XeTeX and not TeX today. Nuff said.

Yes, it's true that some software can afford to not receive major updates for 2-3-5 years… but that's it. Sooner pr later environment around it will change enough that significant changes in core would be needed.

This being said it's true that about 90% of changes in most packages are done “because we can” and not because they are solving some serious issue. Especially commercial ones. They need to sell software somehow, after all…

Nothing is said. They still ship a /usr/bin/tex executable which is identical to Knuth version.

Yet hardly anyone actually uses it, since people need Unicode, OpenType/TrueType fonts, and the myriad packages that were written for LaTeX.
