I think if it's an important subsystem there will be plenty of people who can step up.

Raid, for example, is on its third maintainer in four years. Both transitions have been with the minimum of fuss, although you always suffer to some extent from the fact that knowledge/experience gets lost in the hand-over - unortunately that's unavoidable.
