I'm happy to see this work being done, and with Zack being involved I know the quality will be good.

I use autoconf because I know how to drive it and it gets the job done. configurery goop is not the most exciting piece of development, so I'm not inclined to invest the time to learn some other DSL. Getting a nice explicit error that '$FOO is not available' is, IMHO, a much nicer user experience than an obscure build error or wrong code.

Thank you. And I know what you mean! It's such a pleasure to work with Zack Weinberg on this; I am always glad to hear someone else also recognizing the consistent quality of his work.
