The 5.9 kernel has been released

Linus has released the 5.9 kernel. "Ok, so I'll be honest - I had hoped for quite a bit fewer changes this last week, but at the same time there doesn't really seem to be anything particularly scary in here. It's just more commits and more lines changed than I would have wished for." Some of the significant features in this release are: x86 FSGSBASE support, capacity awareness in the deadline scheduler, the close_range() system call, proactive compaction in the memory-management subsystem, the rationalization of kernel-thread priorities, and more. See the KernelNewbies 5.9 page for more details.

Good news: it has initial support for the Realtek 8821CE chip, which seems to be widely used in low to mid-range laptops.

Bad news:

rfe 2 isn't supported
failed to setup chip efuse info
failed to setup chip information
and it still doesn't work.

Good news: there's supposed to be a simple fix.

Bad news: Realtek have NAKed it in favour of The RFE type 2 should be working with some additional fixes....I will ask someone else to fix them.

Meanwhile, this laptop is over a year old.

Good news: USB Wifi dongles exist.

Does anyone know what went wrong with Realtek, in general? They seem to have passed even the infamous Broadcom in number of driver complaints online as of late.

Good news: the 5.12 kernel finally supports Realtek 8821CE wi-fi adapters wired in rfe 2 mode. So far, it seems to be working properly.
