No need for any trickery of this sort, you can put your kernel under any filename you want on the boot partition, and then refer it to via extlinux.conf. You can even put multiple entries and select them from multiple kernels in a menu (just like GRUB). I implemented this years ago in NixOS.

...and now a sibling comment reminded me; this is done with U-Boot (so it works on many other arm/aarch64 boards out-of-the-box).
