I managed to get a change into this glibc release that made the release notes:

> * ldconfig now defaults to the new format for ld.so.cache. glibc has already supported this format for almost 20 years.

Thanks to Florian Weimer for help merging this patch.

I couldn't find any info on this in documentation, so in lieu of reading the source, is the "new" format architecture dependent? buildroot stopped building the cache a while ago because if you were cross-compiling, it was incorrect for the target arch.
