Free Software's killer applications (NewsForge)

NewsForge takes a quick look at a few free software "killer apps". "While GNU/Linux has gained popularity as an operating system, many criticize it for lacking "killer applications" capable of competing with their Windows and Mac OS X proprietary counterparts. Some killer applications, however, haven't received the recognition they deserve. Here's a short overview of some professional-quality Free Software applications that run under Linux."

No, I'd say OOo, xmms, Konqueror, and maybe (g)mplayer. I don't do
servers if I can avoid them :)

A few days ago I installed mplayer for Windows on a friend's machine. He's
really excited about mplayer being able to play .BIN and .ISO-Images. No
more mounting with daemon tools in order to play a (S)VCD/DVD :)

Yeah, I agree. Apache has had MSFT IIS playing second fiddle for years now, and probably for years to come. It's scary to think what the Internet would be like if IIS was the dominant HTTP server.

I definitely agree with the article putting Blender at the top of the list. Blender is d4 b0mb!

Not too bad a piece.

I was a bit disappointed that he neglected to note, in the last graf, the existence of
Cinelerra, Kino, and 2 or 3 other video editing packages. Granted, none of them is Premiere.

But then, *Premiere* wasn't Premiere until about 5.5 or 6.

He also misses things like GNUcash and the rest of it's ilk.

But still, every nail in the "Linux has no user apps" coffin helps.
