It doesn't work. There are three states here -- present, not-present and unknown. Failing to find a positive dentry is not the same thing as finding a negative dentry.

You'd have to make the cache more elaborate and complicate invalidation rules, but you could potentially cache the fact that every (positive) dentry in the directory is cached. Seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth, but technically possible.
