It's a good thing, too, as I've discovered: some of the old recordings I've got sound terrible if your equipment is actually able to reproduce the encoded sound too faithfully (i.e., more faithfully that the sound engineer's setup of the time), but playing them through a lousy DAC and a gold cable sounds wonderful!

Remeber Doom and the first Quake on old 320x200 displays? When hooked to a "3D accelerator" with higher resolution, Quake looks awful, it's *meant* to be seen blocky and grainy ;)

A fun anecdote here is that we've long had the technology to build laser record players (that don't wear the media down as much over time), but choose not to for this exact reason; they perfectly reproduce the sound of every speck of dust on the vinyl.
