I think that the ability to deal with a single application rather than the whole desktop truly makes a difference. X11 is still quite good at it via xpra. I truly hope that xpra project idea to duplicate as a wayland compositor to do the same with wayland applications can become a reality soon (https://www.xpra.org/trac/wiki/ProjectIdeas).
