LWN status update
- Our disagreement with our credit card clearing company is heading
toward resolution - slowly. A small portion of the money given as
donations (and advertising payments) to LWN has found its way into our
bank account; we're working on getting the rest. Meanwhile, however,
we lack the ability to accept credit card payments - something we
have to fix before subscriptions can start.
- Implementation of site code for the handling of subscriptions is proceeding - slowly. When writing code that does things like charge money to credit cards, it's best not to be in too much of a hurry.
Thanks yet again for your support. We'll do our best to keep you informed
as things happen.

Don't make the mistake of offering too much for free when you move to the subscription model. People won't pay unless there's big enough advantage.
I suggest the credit card donation transactions be encrypted. I started to donate via credit card a couple of times in the past few months but stopped when my browser notified me that the form would not be encrypted. I don't need any more trouble from credit card fraud.LWN status update
Actually, LWN's credit card transactions have always been handled through our secure server (Apache, mod_ssl 2.8.9, OpenSSL 0.9.6). It's all encrypted, and the credit card is never stored on our server. If you aren't getting the encryption, perhaps you need to update your browser? With Mozilla, you'll need the mozilla-psm package, if memory serves.

Okay, it must be my browser then. My apologies. I just today signed up with PayPal, so I just used that to make a donation.LWN status update
Our company has been using PayPal for almost a year now and while it's not perfect, it's secure and reasonably priced. Worth a look anyway.

The security and kernel pages are an invaluable source of information. Instead of reading through hundreds of bugtraq-posts I can count on you to read, understand and report everything I need to know to keep my servers running. I look forward to pay for a subscription.Looking forward to the subscription
