XTerm and glyphs

A repeated observation in the article is that xterm displays boxes for some characters (or blanks). XTerm is completely dependent on font support for glyphs. Unlike many other applications it doesn't pick glyphs from different fonts to substitute for missing ones. The fact different point sizes show different glyphs is annoying. The "fixed" font should have consistent coverage, but for some reason it doesn't ("clean" doesn't either).

(One caveat on the above: XTerm can do its own box drawing characters if they are missing.)

Unfortunately few bitmap typefaces have really good coverage. If anyone has suggestions, especially ones likely to be in distributions already, I'm interested in hearing them.
