Yeah, the old guarantees that language purity could enforce security appear pretty much dead now. The implementation always needs to do extra work to keep people from reaching out beyond the bounds of the implementation via side channels like this -- and we don't know what new side channels may exist in the future, or may exist now yet be unknown to us :(
