I managed to build chromium with LTO on my puny personal machine

How puny? (Real memory, swap space)

Probably bigger than the server I usually use to build kernels.

16 GB RAM might not be "puny", I agree, but that was enough to build chromium without touching swap. Swapping would be murdering performance (and probably hardware) so I made sure to avoid it :) But nothing drastic, I could still comfortably work on it on other stuff.

Building gcc itself, on the other hand...
