The "Upspin" global filesystem

A group of Google developers has announced the release of (an early version of) a new global filesystem called "Upspin". "Upspin looks a bit like a global file system, but its real contribution is a set of interfaces, protocols, and components from which an information management system can be built, with properties such as security and access control suited to a modern, networked world. Upspin is not an 'app' or a web service, but rather a suite of software components, intended to run in the network and on devices connected to it, that together provide a secure, modern information storage and sharing network."

Looks nice ! Except I'd have preferred if anyone could run its own keyserver, perhaps by announcing it through a DNS record or something.
But it looks less ad-hoc and specific than e.g. owncloud server federation, and could be implemented by many different server types. All it needs now is some refinement and critical mass.

Fast reading the article I have first read "intended to ruin the network" instead of "to run in"... Future will tell if this actually happens. ;-)

An announcement that complains about the „fragmented“ file sharing, and then goes on to introduce another mechanism… someone hasn’t read their XKCD.
