The person in question is Eric S. Raymond, who isn't exactly a nobody in the community. He's done a number of interesting things over the years – including co-founding the Open Source Initiative – but excessive modesty about his personal accomplishments and influence on the field has never been one of his vices :^)

I'm very well aware of some of the individuals involved :-).

But as paulj also observes he's not the only abrasive (IMO of course) contributor.

esr is a rare case, though: there are not that many personalities in the FOSS world who make whole classes of potential contributors feel unwelcome – by the sheer force of their personality.
