Well, I guess that's technically true, but then you might as well keep the old tools around to achieve the same without writing any new code, as has in fact been done.

My point was that writing new code to as compatibility layers for the newer tools is pointless because the old tools still work and instead of lessening the maintenance burden, the wrappers would actually do the opposite.

But then there are 2 projects independant rather one new active one that is maintained AND properly supercedes the old. The old code hangs around in distro's rather than causing a switch over, then years later there's confusion.
