Completely agree. I wonder if all the above can be easily solved using a meta-openwrt, meta-lede, and some basic github repos ...

Used both and feel that the build system and recipes offered by the OpenWRT/Lede are easier than the one provided by OpenEmbedded. Both will work, but for some reason the python errors sometimes coming from OpenEmbedded/Yocto have always felt more cryptic to solve.

I don't think OpenWRT's documentation, supported hardware list, or prebuilt images are reinventing any wheel that OE ever had.
