Welcome to the Free Software Supporter, the Free Software Foundation's monthly news digest and action update -- being read by you and 116,276 other activists. That's 2,849 more than last month! ### The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is hiring! *From August 22nd* The Web Developer position, reporting to the executive director, works closely with our sysadmin team to maintain and improve the FSF's Web presence. The FSF uses several different free software Web platforms in the course of its work, both internally and externally. These platforms are critical to work supporting the GNU Project, free software adoption, free media formats, and freedom on the Internet; and to opposing bulk surveillance, Digital Restrictions Management, software patents, and proprietary software. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. **To guarantee consideration, submit your application by Friday, September 9, 2016 at 17:00 EDT.** * <https://www.fsf.org/news/fsf-job-opportunity-web-developer> *From August 30th* The Copyright and Licensing Associate position, reporting to the executive director, works as part of our licensing and compliance team to protect and promote the use of freely licensed works of software and documentation. For over twenty years, the FSF's Licensing and Compliance Lab has been the preeminent community resource for information about free licensing. From enforcement of the GNU General Public License, to certifying software and devices as fully free, to the writing and distribution of licensing-related educational materials, the team does work vital for the free software movement. **Applications must be received by Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 17:00 EDT.** * <https://www.fsf.org/news/fsf-job-opportunity-copyright-an...> ## TABLE OF CONTENTS * Software should be free: The Free Software Foundation's first annual report * August Free Software Directory meeting recaps * The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews Stefano Zacchiroli of Software Heritage * This lawsuit could be the beginning of the end for DRM * With your support the Libre Tea Computer Card, a candidate for Respects Your Freedom certification, is funded * Licensing resource series: h-node hardware directory * Digital Restrictions Inside: Will the US Federal Trade Commission agree to label DRM-encumbered products? * Publishers must let online readers pay for news anonymously * The Document Foundation and the Free Sofware Foundation Europe strengthen their relationship * GCC 6 Release Series * Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory * LibrePlanet featured resource: Free Educational Software for Mobile Devices * GNU Spotlight with Brandon Invergo: Eighteen new GNU releases! * Other FSF and free software events * Thank GNUs! * GNU copyright contributions * Take action with the FSF! The report also examines the impact of the FSF's programs, and FY2015's major events, including LibrePlanet and our thirtieth anniversary. * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/software-should-be-fr...> ### August Free Software Directory meeting recaps *From August 30th* Check out the great work our volunteers accomplished at the August Free Software Directory meetings. Every week free software activists from around the world come together in #fsf on irc.freenode.org to help improve the Free Software Directory. *August 26th meeting* * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/directory/free-software-directo...> *August 19th meeting* * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/directory/free-software-directo...> *August 12th meeting* * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/directory/free-software-directo...> ### The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews Stefano Zacchiroli of Software Heritage *From August 25th* In this edition, we conducted an email-based interview with Stefano Zacchiroli of Software Heritage, a recently announced nonprofit initiative to archive, organize, and share all publicly available software source code. * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/the-licensing-and-com...> ### This lawsuit could be the beginning of the end for DRM *From August 17th* Our friends at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recently filed a lawsuit challenging Section 1201 of the US's Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which provides legal reinforcement to the technical shackles of Digital Restrictions Management (DRM). Defective by Design (DbD) applauds this lawsuit and agrees with the EFF that Section 1201 violates the right to freedom of speech. We hope that excising Section 1201 from US law can be the beginning of the end for DRM. Take a selfie against DRM in Web standards. * <https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/lawsuit_could_be_b...> ### With your support the Libre Tea Computer Card, a candidate for Respects Your Freedom certification, is funded *From August 10th* The Earth-friendly EOMA68 Computing Devices project was a crowdfunding campaign run on Crowd Supply to produce a line of hardware products that are ecologically responsible, and built based on royalty-free, unencumbered hardware standards. * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/support-the-libre-tea...> *From August 24th* * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/only-a-short-time-lef...> ### Licensing resource series: h-node hardware directory *From August 8th* Hardware listed on h-node doesn't come with FSF certification, but it does come with the information users need to find out the extent to which the hardware is supported by fully free GNU/Linux distros. Members of the community can submit entries to h-node whenever they get a chance to test it against one of these free operating systems. So it depends on users like you stepping up to help out. * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/licensing-resource-se...> ### Digital Restrictions Inside: Will the US Federal Trade Commission agree to label DRM-encumbered products? *From August 5th* Have you ever purchased a digital product, only to discover that you couldn't use it as you wish? The DbD campaign has been fighting to eliminate DRM entirely, and today we signed on to a proposal to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that would help users avoid buying DRM-encumbered products. But don't wait for them; take action to help inform others now, by writing critical reviews of DRM-locked products on sites like Amazon. * <https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/digital_restrictio...> ### Publishers must let online readers pay for news anonymously *From September 1st by Richard Stallman* Online newspapers and magazines have come to depend, for their income, on a system of advertising and surveillance, which is both annoying and unjust. Readers are rebelling by installing ad blockers, which cut into the publisher’s surveillance-based income. And in response, some sites are cutting off access to readers unless they accept being surveilled. What they ought to do instead is give us a truly anonymous way to pay. * <https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/sep/01/online...> ### The Document Foundation and the Free Sofware Foundation Europe strengthen their relationship *From August 17th by FSFE* The Free Software Foundation (FSFE) is joining the Advisory Board of The Document Foundation. At the same time, The Document Foundation is becoming an associated organization of the FSFE. * <https://fsfe.org/news/2016/news-20160817-01.en.html> ### GCC 6 Release Series *From August 25th* The GNU project and the GCC developers are pleased to announce the release of GCC 6.2. * <https://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-6/> ### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and exciting free software projects. To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome. The next meeting is Friday, September 2nd from 12pm to 3pm EDT (16:00 to 19:00 UTC). Details here: * <https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Free_Software_Directory:Me...> ### LibrePlanet featured resource: Free Educational Software for Mobile Devices Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help. For this month, we are highlighting Free Educational Software for Mobile Devices, which provides information about applications for mobile devices with a focus on education and curricula. You are invited to adopt, spread and improve this important resource. * <https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Free_Educational_Software_fo...> Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us know at <campaigns@fsf.org>. ### GNU Spotlight with Brandon Invergo: Eighteen new GNU releases! * [adns-1.5.1](https://www.gnu.org/software/adns/) * [binutils-2.27](https://www.gnu.org/software/binutils/) * [dico-2.3](https://www.gnu.org/software/dico/) * [diffutils-3.5](https://www.gnu.org/software/diffutils/) * [fontopia-1.7](https://www.gnu.org/software/fontopia/) * [freeipmi-1.5.3](https://www.gnu.org/software/freeipmi/) * [gama-1.18](https://www.gnu.org/software/gama/) * [gcc-6.2.0](https://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/) * [glibc-2.24](https://www.gnu.org/software/glibc/) * [gnudos-1.9](https://www.gnu.org/software/gnudos/) * [gnuhealth-3.0.3](http://www.gnuhealth.org/) * [gnupg-2.1.15](https://www.gnu.org/software/gnupg/) * [gnutls-3.5.3](https://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls/) * [guix-0.11.0](https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/) * [hyperbole-6.0.2](https://www.gnu.org/software/hyperbole/) * [java-training-wheels-2.8](https://www.gnu.org/software/jtw/) * [parallel-20160822](https://www.gnu.org/software/parallel/) * [xboard-4.9.1](https://www.gnu.org/software/xboard/) For announcements of most new GNU releases, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: <https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu>. This month, we welcome Ricardo Wurmus as a new co-maintainer of GNU Guix, Benno Schulenberg as the new maintainer of GNU nano, and Robert Weiner as the maintainer of the new package GNU OO-Browser. A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance: please see <https://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint> if you'd like to help. The general page on how to help GNU is at <https://www.gnu.org/help/help.html>. If you have a working or partly working program that you'd like to offer to the GNU Project as a GNU package, see <https://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html>. As always, please feel free to write to us at <maintainers@gnu.org> with any GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments. ### Other FSF and free software events For event details, as well as to sign-up to be notified for future events in your area, please visit <https://www.fsf.org/events>. * November, Las Palmas de Gran Ganaria, Spain, ["GNU Health Conference 2016"](https://www.fsf.org/events/event-20161118-laspalmas-gnuhe...) ### Thank GNUs! You can contribute by joining at <https://my.fsf.org/join>. If you're already a member, you can help refer new members (and earn some rewards) by adding a line with your member number to your email signature like: I'm an FSF member -- Help us support software freedom! <https://my.fsf.org/join> The FSF is also always looking for volunteers (<https://www.fsf.org/volunteer>). From rabble-rousing to hacking, from issue coordination to envelope stuffing -- there's something here for everybody to do. Also, head over to our campaign section (<https://www.fsf.org/campaigns>) and take action on software patents, DRM, free software adoption, OpenDocument, RIAA, and more. ### Copyright © 2016 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
