### The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is hiring!

*From August 22nd*

The Web Developer position, reporting to the executive director, works
closely with our sysadmin team to maintain and improve the FSF's Web
presence. The FSF uses several different free software Web platforms
in the course of its work, both internally and externally. These
platforms are critical to work supporting the GNU Project, free
software adoption, free media formats, and freedom on the Internet;
and to opposing bulk surveillance, Digital Restrictions Management,
software patents, and proprietary software. Applications will be
reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. **To
guarantee consideration, submit your application by Friday, September
9, 2016 at 17:00 EDT.**

The Copyright and Licensing Associate position, reporting to the
executive director, works as part of our licensing and compliance team
to protect and promote the use of freely licensed works of software
and documentation. For over twenty years, the FSF's Licensing and
Compliance Lab has been the preeminent community resource for
information about free licensing. From enforcement of the GNU General
Public License, to certifying software and devices as fully free, to
the writing and distribution of licensing-related educational
materials, the team does work vital for the free software
movement. **Applications must be received by Sunday, September 18,
2016 at 17:00 EDT.**

### This lawsuit could be the beginning of the end for DRM

*From August 17th*

Our friends at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recently filed
a lawsuit challenging Section 1201 of the US's Digital Millenium
Copyright Act, which provides legal reinforcement to the technical
shackles of Digital Restrictions Management (DRM). Defective by Design
(DbD) applauds this lawsuit and agrees with the EFF that Section 1201
violates the right to freedom of speech. We hope that excising Section
1201 from US law can be the beginning of the end for DRM. Take a
selfie against DRM in Web standards.

The Earth-friendly EOMA68 Computing Devices project was a crowdfunding
campaign run on Crowd Supply to produce a line of hardware products
that are ecologically responsible, and built based on royalty-free,
unencumbered hardware standards.

### Licensing resource series: h-node hardware directory

*From August 8th*

Hardware listed on h-node doesn't come with FSF certification, but it
does come with the information users need to find out the extent to
which the hardware is supported by fully free GNU/Linux
distros. Members of the community can submit entries to h-node
whenever they get a chance to test it against one of these free
operating systems. So it depends on users like you stepping up to help
out.

### Digital Restrictions Inside: Will the US Federal Trade Commission agree to label DRM-encumbered
products?

*From August 5th*

Have you ever purchased a digital product, only to discover that you
couldn't use it as you wish? The DbD campaign has been fighting to
eliminate DRM entirely, and today we signed on to a proposal to the
U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that would help users avoid buying
DRM-encumbered products. But don't wait for them; take action to help
inform others now, by writing critical reviews of DRM-locked products
on sites like Amazon.

### Publishers must let online readers pay for news anonymously

Online newspapers and magazines have come to depend, for their income,
on a system of advertising and surveillance, which is both annoying
and unjust. Readers are rebelling by installing ad blockers, which cut
into the publisher’s surveillance-based income. And in response, some
sites are cutting off access to readers unless they accept being
surveilled. What they ought to do instead is give us a truly anonymous
way to pay.

### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory

Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to
discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth
of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version
control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software
Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past
decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and
exciting free software projects.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place
in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of
regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.
