Does anyone understand the reasons why the Apache Foundation insists on spending resources keeping OO alive rather than just admit that LibreOffice "won".

It can't take many resources to maintain AOO at its current level of activity.

At the current level of activity where they can't even manage to get a security fix out in a timely manner? Yes, it doesn't take many resources to maintain a project really poorly. :)

The question is, why would they want to continue to inflict poorly maintained, unstable, and unsafe software on the world, under a well-known name that many people recognize and, sadly, still place too much trust in?

I must say I'm really disappointed at how the Apache Foundation has dealt with AOO. Putting out an insecure product out there to millions of users is really terrible. Especially when there is a simple solution, which is to redirect everyone to LO, I have no doubt the LO community would be more than happy to help AOO users have a simple upgrade path.

Same here. This is harming the prospects of open source office technology - Microsoft couldn't do more to harm it than aoo does, sadly.

The entire ecosystem around Foss office is less healthy thanks to this and users are harmed, getting far less than the best open source has to offer. Yeah it is frustrating, I can totally imagine that for the contributors to LO...

<sarcasm>Because with Apache Foundation's complicated bureaucracy, it would take more work to do the handover that it takes for a year of AOO development ?</sarcasm>

Or for a slightly less snarky explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalation_of_commitment
