Parent article: LEDE and OpenWrt

The LEDE split happened in complete secrecy, there was no discussion within OpenWrt (or even publicly) of LEDE or the rationale behind it in the months prior to public announcement. The OpenWrt project has the same goals as LEDE but was left out of the discussions leading to the mistaken impression that OpenWrt is somehow against or blocking LEDE's changes -- what we object to is essentially the ambush; the creation of LEDE in secret and concept that LEDE by mere creation can fix the problems present in the OpenWrt infrastructure, especially since as Kaloz pointed out it's the same people responsible for the existing status quo. It's mere political posturing with no proven track record where the key motivating factor seems to be issues which were never brought up for discussion in the first place.

It is hoped that the two groups can resolve their issues and work together, but labeling it as "expressed an interest in joining LEDE" is a gross mischaracterization.

Ambush? Are you for real? A group of developers decided to Fork and move their effort to that fork. Outsiders to the group don't get to declare it an ambush and claim it was created in "secret". Well I suppose you can but your position has no merit whatsoever. People have the right to associate with whoever they want, donate their developer time however they want and you don't have a say or get a say. That is how things work.

Would it have been better if they just finally got tired of the problems and simply walked away from any development? Because I don't think that would be better. I wish both sides luck, but LEDE deserves credit for not just breaking out of a situation they were unhappy in but moving on with open source contributions rather than just stop contributing. It's unfortunate that this took forking but I'd rather they fork than the project die.

Maybe they should have talked about it before doing it, but if your post is how that response would have went I don't blame them for not telling people outside their group.

Based on the level of feeling expressed I'd say it was anything but.
