I believe you can fix the problem off the desktop turning off, by simply connecting the phone to a power charger, and turning on "Stay awake" in "Developer options".

You can also write a simple app which can hold a wakelock to keep the screen on, and perhaps write a simple widget to turn on/turn off the wakelock.
