"Any project removing the power that Google Play Services holds over device-makers is surely valuable"

Could not disagree more with this.

The one thing keeping Android from total incompatible fragmentation is this power that Google holds. The last thing that any user or developer would want would be the proliferation of incompatible Android implementations.

If google was a non-profit with the goal of serving the public at large, it indeed would be bad to work on any projects that undermine google.

Unfortunately, they are not only a for profit, they long since have shown that they don't care about the public, as long as the AdWords dollars roll in, the public can fsck itself.
