You forgot to mention that existing 32-bit code is supported by continuing to maintain the entire 32-bit environment in parallel with the new 64-bit stuff, and the two cannot interact without something atively translating between them.

Come to think about it, that sounds an awful lot like IPv4/IPv6 dual stacks. :)
