TPP has provision banning requirements to transfer or access source code (Knowledge Ecology International)

Knowledge Ecology International looks at Article 14.17 of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which has a provision banning requirements to transfer or provide access to software source code. "I'm wondering how the GPL fares here, and how much money Microsoft spent lobbying to get this included in the TPP, or if the NSA has a role in this. One aspect of this provision is that governments cannot insist on source code transparency, for mass market software, even to address concerns over security or interoperability."

FSF: Time to act on TPP is now

The Free Software Foundation opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and encourages others to take action. "The FSF has been warning users of the dangers of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) for many years now. The TPP is an agreement negotiated in secret nominally for the promotion of trade, yet entire chapters of it are dedicated to implementing restrictions and regulations on computing and the Internet. In April of 2015, a leaked draft of the agreement revealed a whole host of problems. From extensions to the term of copyright, confusing provisions on software patents, and spreading the worst aspects of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's (DMCA) Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) provisions beyond the United States, the TPP negotiations were and are an attack on user freedom." There will be a rally and march to stop TPP on November 16 in Washington, D.C., and a hackathon on November 17.

SFC: GPL Enforcement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership

The Software Freedom Conservancy weighs in on the TPP. "Many people have criticized the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) treaty since the text was released. In particular, some of the terms in the agreement are bad for software freedom and other social justice causes. Despite the TPP's stated intention to bring "social benefits" in addition to economic growth, the terms of TPP work against social benefits and awards too much power and control to large multinational corporations, including proprietary software companies." SFC finds the provision banning requirements to transfer or provide access to software source code confusing, but it will not have much impact on copyleft licensing. (Thanks to Paul Wise)
